3 ivory traffickers arrested with 252 kg of ivory
Benin, 10 Oct 2018On Wednesday 10 October 2018 3 traffickers were arrested with 167 kg ivory in Cotonou, the capital of Benin. They carried all 167 kg of the ivory in three bags into the hotel room where they were surprised by the operation team, consisting of Police and officers of DGEFC (Direction Générale des Eaux, Forêts et Chasse) and supported by AALF-B team, member of the EAGLE Network, in the middle of the transaction, and all three of them ended behind bars.

Well organized ring was activating the pangolin scales illegal trade with a network of lower level traffickers and poachers in the south of the country. They brought the pangolin scales in two cars, concealed in suitcases, knack sack and stuffed some in several spaces in the car, including under the carpets of the car and other hidden corners. On the way to the capital city, they bribed officers at a police check point to get the contraband through. The policeman tried to use his position to avoid arrest, he was even wearing police uniform at that moment, but he ended behind bars together with the other traffickers.

They were arrested in the act, with the contraband carefully packed in a jute bag and concealed in a travel bag full of clothes to deceive the attention of the authorities. The retired soldier organized the transaction, he had been involved in ivory trafficking for years, he used to operate in several neighboring countries including Mali.
